Houston Lebowski Bash: The Afterparty

It seems that I’m lucky enough to be able to enjoy really fun events surrounding The Big Lebowski. I’ve only seen the movie once before in my life, and that was at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. There was art, involuntary hiking, a gorgeous view, and a performance by one of my favorite comics, Josh Blue. Oh, and you know, a viewing of The Big Lebowski while sitting in a huge rock formation.

But it turns out you don’t have to venture far from sea level to enjoy Lebowski. I talked about the Houston Lebowski Bash a few days ago, and much as I expected, the party delivered. We were late for a few things like the Caucasians and bowling, but we caught more than enough to have a good time. And you can’t complain about a free party (with free booze). You could tell that the organizers put a lot of work into creating a really fun get together, and I think everyone appreciated it. I know I did.

So on the way to the Bash, we stopped off to get a Cotton Candy Blizzard and something to line our stomachs for the inevitable parade of drinking that would await us, and we came upon a surprise:

That’s right. We ate DUDE sandwiches at Dairy Queen. Dorky, I know, but we felt compelled. Despite the name, the sandwich is not all that great. It was pretty gross, actually. I think our DQ is not for eating, just treating.

We showed up just in time for a performance from The Tontons, who I am definitely going to look up. We were also treated to a special performance of Bob Dylan’s The Man in Me. Please forgive the terrible video, as we are photographers and clearly not videographers:

After that, of course, was the movie. About halfway through it, we were treated to a UH-grown Sexy Attack. The video is dark, but you get the idea. This was pretty freaking awesome.

All in all, it was not a bad way to start a Saturday night, and a really fun way to watch an awesome movie.

The next day was my mom’s birthday, and she wanted to go bowling. Yes! So we headed to Palace Lanes with the family. JD bought a new bowling ball a couple months ago and has yet to have holes drilled in it, but he wanted to break it in anyway. So he did what I like to call “granny bowling” for a few frames. Let’s see what happens.

Despite what you see on the video, JD actually hit a strike with his first new ball/granny bowl frame. But we have no proof of that, so I will just remind him of this video the next time we go bowling. You know, just to even the playing field.
